PHYS 1010, Elementary Physics (PS)

Credit Hours: 3.0

Course DescriptionConceptual survey course in introductory physics. Principles of mechanics, heat, light, sound, electricity, magnetism, and modern physics.

Signature Assignment

My instructor assigned the class to get into groups of 3-5 (of our choice) and prepare a one-page summary on a topic of interest related to physics. I was in a group of three, and we decided to do our project that demonstrates mainly pertaining to the center of mass, equilibrium, and gravity. We used these principles in our experiment by balancing two forks on a toothpick. Along with the paper, we were also given approximately 10 minutes to present our paper to the class. I chose this assignment for my ePortfolio because I learned a significant amount of information and physics principles in our group project.

Reflection

After doing the group project, I have learned that the center of mass is the average position of mass of an object. I learned that equilibrium is the state of an object in which it is not acted upon by a net force or a net torque. After having practiced this experiment which seems to look impossible, we realized that it works and can easily be explained through the simples laws of physics.

I have learned that this assignment demonstrates my learning in all the SLCC learning goals. I learned how to work effectively and well with a group, and it will help me the next time I get involved in a group project or mass setting. This assignment gave me the opportunity to apply scientific methods for solving problems and testing an experiment.
